True wellness is not a program — it is a practice. At Relais La Capricciosa, our morning rituals draw on centuries of Florentine botanical tradition, Santa Maria Novella amenities, and the restorative quiet of a Renaissance palazzo.
The ancient Romans understood something about wellness that modern health culture is only now rediscovering: that rest is not a reward for productivity, but a practice in itself. Florence has long understood this, too — from the Renaissance culture of the bagni to the meditative gardens of the Boboli and the fragrant stillness of the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, whose pharmacists have been distilling botanical remedies since 1221. Wellness in Florence is not something invented by the hospitality industry; it is woven into the fabric of a city that has valued beauty, balance, and sensory refinement for eight centuries. At Relais La Capricciosa, we continue this tradition — not with a branded spa programme, but with spaces, rituals, and amenities that honour the Florentine understanding of what it means to feel well.
Florence occupies a remarkable position among European cities: it is both intensely cultural and profoundly sensory. The same city that produced Michelangelo and Machiavelli also produced the world's oldest pharmacy, the finest botanical gardens of the Renaissance, and a tradition of artisanal perfumery that survives to this day. This dual character — intellectual rigour married to sensory pleasure — makes Florence uniquely suited to a conception of wellness that goes beyond the physical. A morning at the Uffizi nourishes the mind; an afternoon in a hidden garden restores the body; an evening with a glass of Chianti Classico and a view of the rooftops satisfies the soul. Wellness in Florence is not a spa treatment — it is a way of being in the city.
The climate contributes. Florence's springs and autumns are among the mildest in continental Europe — warm enough to sit outdoors in a courtyard garden from April through October, cool enough in the mornings to walk the centro storico without the oppressive heat of a Roman or Neapolitan summer. The light, too, plays a role: the soft, golden quality of Florentine light, reflected off the Arno and the sandstone façades, has drawn painters for centuries. It is also, we believe, one of the reasons guests at the Relais report sleeping more deeply and waking more refreshed than they do at home.
A morning routine at a luxury hotel in Florence should feel nothing like a morning at home. It should feel slower, more deliberate, more attentive to sensation. At Relais La Capricciosa, we have designed our morning experience around this principle. The day begins with natural light — our suites are oriented to receive the morning sun through tall Renaissance windows, and we provide blackout curtains for those who prefer to sleep later, but our recommendation is to let the light wake you. The body's circadian rhythm responds to dawn light, and in Florence, dawn arrives through windows that frame terracotta rooftops and bell towers. There are worse alarm clocks.
From your suite, the morning unfolds at your own pace. Our Pillow Menu and Fragrance Menu — available from the moment your reservation is confirmed — allow you to customise your sleeping environment before you arrive. Choose from seven pillow types, including memory foam, buckwheat, and hypoallergenic options, and from a selection of room fragrances developed in collaboration with a Florentine perfumer: iris and vetiver for calm, bergamot and cedar for clarity, rosemary and sage for invigoration.
Breakfast can be taken in L'Alchimista, in La Corte Segreta, or in the privacy of your suite. We recommend the courtyard on any morning when the weather permits — the combination of fresh-squeezed blood orange juice, warm cornetti, and the scent of jasmine from the garden walls is, we believe, one of the finest ways to begin a day anywhere in Italy.
The Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, founded by Dominican friars in 1221 and operating continuously from its cloistered premises near the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, is the oldest pharmacy in continuous operation in the world. Its products — rosewater, acqua di colonia, herbal infusions, face creams, and soaps made from recipes that in some cases predate the Renaissance — represent a pharmacological tradition that predates modern cosmetics by five centuries. The Santa Maria Novella amenities we provide at Relais La Capricciosa are drawn from this tradition.
Every suite is stocked with a curated selection of Santa Maria Novella products: the Melograno soap, the Rosa Gardenia body cream, the Acqua di Colonia that Catherine de' Medici is said to have brought to the French court when she married Henry II in 1533. These are not merely luxury toiletries; they are living artefacts of a botanical and pharmaceutical tradition that has been refined over eight centuries. Guests who wish to explore this tradition further can visit the Officina itself — a seven-minute walk from Via Porta Rossa — where the frescoed sales rooms and the ancient herbarium are open to the public. Our concierge arranges private guided visits that include the cloistered garden where many of the original botanicals are still cultivated.
For guests who prefer not to leave the privacy of their suite, we offer a programme of in-room wellness treatments delivered by selected Florence practitioners. Our signature Florentine Wellness Ritual opens with a botanical body scrub using extracts of Tuscan iris, bergamot, and rosemary, followed by a warm aromatic oil massage inspired by the meditative traditions of the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica. The sequence closes with a guided breathing exercise and a cup of herbal tisane prepared with ingredients from our own garden. The full ritual takes ninety minutes and can be scheduled from 08:00 each morning.
Beyond the signature ritual, we partner with a network of Florence-based practitioners for targeted treatments: deep-tissue and sports massage, craniosacral therapy, osteopathy, reflexology, and personalised skincare consultations using botanical products. For guests staying three nights or more, our concierge can design a bespoke wellness programme that integrates treatments, dietary preferences, and activity recommendations — a morning yoga session in La Corte Segreta, an afternoon walk to the Bardini Gardens, an evening meditation in your suite.
The morning routine at our luxury hotel in Florence is not a fixed programme; it is a framework within which each guest finds their own rhythm. Some guests want structure; others want only to be left in peace with a pot of tea and a view of the rooftops. Both are welcome. The only requirement is that you arrive without a schedule.
La Corte Segreta — our hidden courtyard garden, concealed behind the Renaissance façade of the palazzo — is the heart of the wellness experience at Relais La Capricciosa. The garden is enclosed on all four sides by the walls of the building, creating a space of remarkable stillness in the centre of one of Europe's most visited cities. Jasmine climbs the southern wall; lemon trees in terracotta pots line the east side; wisteria drapes the iron pergola overhead. In spring and summer, the garden is alive with scent — the mingled fragrances of jasmine, lemon blossom, and the herbs that grow in the raised beds along the western wall: rosemary, sage, lavender, and the Florentine iris that has been the symbol of the city since the Middle Ages.
Breakfast in La Corte Segreta is available from 07:30, and the garden remains accessible to guests throughout the day. In the late afternoon, when the shadow of the palazzo's upper floors falls across the courtyard, the temperature drops and the space becomes ideal for reading, conversation, or quiet contemplation. After sunset, discreet lighting transforms the garden into one of Florence's most intimate evening settings — a space for an aperitivo, a private dinner, or simply the pleasure of sitting outdoors in a city that, beyond these walls, is never quite still.
We designed the garden not as an amenity but as a room — a room without a ceiling, open to the sky, where the boundary between interior and exterior dissolves. Guests who discover it on their first morning often return to it at every hour of the day, finding that its character changes with the light, the season, and the time of day. It is, in the truest sense, a private garden sanctuary in the heart of Florence.
