Suite Capricciosa — Suite Capricciosa — The Jewel of Via Porta Rossa

There are rooms that accommodate, rooms that impress, and then — rarely — rooms that transform. The Suite Capricciosa belongs to this last, rarest category. Perched on the uppermost floor of our fifteenth-century palazzo on Via Porta Rossa, this sixty-five square metre penthouse suite commands Florence from a position that even the Medici would have coveted. Its private terrace — the only one in the hotel — opens directly onto a panorama that reads like a checklist of Renaissance masterpieces: the crenellated tower of Palazzo Vecchio, the terracotta expanse of the Duomo's dome, the distant green hills of Fiesole shimmering in the Tuscan haze. This is not a room with a view; this is a room that contains the view, that makes it part of the furniture, that invites you to sit with a glass of Sassicaia and watch the light perform its ancient, daily ritual across the most beautiful skyline in Europe.

Inside, the suite unfolds across two distinct living areas connected by a sense of unhurried grandeur. The master bedroom occupies the quieter wing, shielded from the terrace by floor-to-ceiling glass doors that can be left open on warm evenings to let the night air of Florence drift across the king-size bed. The bed itself is a statement piece — a custom headboard in padded midnight velvet, flanked by brass sconces that cast pools of warm light across pillows dressed in the finest Tuscan linen. Above, the ceiling retains its original exposed beams, their dark walnut a counterpoint to the pale Venetian plaster walls. Underfoot, wide-plank oak flooring has been hand-finished by a Florentine workshop that has served the city's palazzi for three generations. A decorative stone fireplace, its mantel carved with acanthus leaves in the manner of the early Renaissance, anchors the far wall — no longer functional, but radiating the same sense of warmth and permanence it offered when this palazzo was young.

The living room is a salon in the truest sense. A deep sofa in dusky rose velvet faces the fireplace wall, its cushions generous enough to disappear into with a book, a glass, or simply the silence of a Florentine afternoon. Original artworks by emerging Tuscan artists — curated in collaboration with a local gallery — hang on the walls, their subjects ranging from abstract interpretations of the Arno valley to figurative studies in the tradition of the Macchiaioli. A dining table in dark walnut seats four comfortably, making the suite ideal for private suppers prepared by our kitchen and served by room service at any hour. The minibar here is not a minibar at all — it is a curated drinks cabinet stocked with Super Tuscan wines, artisan grappa, Florentine craft gin, and a selection of local delicacies that changes with the season. A Nespresso machine, a Smart TV concealed within a bespoke cabinet, and seamless high-speed Wi-Fi ensure that every modern expectation is met without compromising the suite's atmosphere of timeless luxury.

The bathroom is a sanctuary within a sanctuary. Bookmatched slabs of Statuario marble — the most prized of Carrara's whites — cover the floor and walls in a seamless sweep of grey-veined luminosity. A freestanding soaking tub, oval and deep, occupies a raised platform beside the window, offering views through frosted glass toward the terrace and the rooftops beyond. A separate walk-in shower with both ceiling-mounted rainfall and adjustable side jets provides an immersive experience, while a double vanity with backlit oval mirrors and a heated stone floor make the morning routine feel ceremonial rather than functional. The amenities are bespoke, produced in small batches by a Florentine house whose signature scent — a blend of Tuscan iris, white musk, and aged cedarwood — was created exclusively for the Suite Capricciosa and is available nowhere else in the world.

Yet for all its interior splendour, it is the terrace that defines this suite — and perhaps defines the Relais La Capricciosa itself. Furnished with hand-forged iron loungers, a marble bistro table, and planters overflowing with jasmine, rosemary, and miniature olive trees, the terrace becomes a private piazza suspended above the city. Breakfast here, with the morning sun gilding the stones of Palazzo Vecchio, is an experience that rewrites your understanding of what a hotel morning can be. Aperitivo at sunset, when the sky cycles through rose, copper, and violet and the swallows wheel above the Arno, is equally unforgettable. The Suite Capricciosa does not simply offer the best hotel suite in Florence's historic centre — it offers a relationship with the city itself, intimate, elevated, and entirely your own.
