Michelangelo’s David: Why Scale and Presence Cannot Be Reproduced

No reproduction prepares you for the David. The original stands five metres and seventeen centimetres tall in the Tribuna of the Galleria dell’Accademia, lit from above by a skylight that Emilio De Fabris designed specifically for this purpose. Michelangelo quarried the block of Carrara marble in 1501 from a piece that had been partially worked and abandoned by two previous sculptors, and he completed the figure in two years. The tension in David’s hands, the slight rotation of the head, the asymmetry of the eyes — details invisible in any reproduction — are perceptible only in front of the original. The Walking Route via the Duomo and San Marco

At Piazza del Duomo, pause: the Baptistery doors are to your left, Giotto’s Campanile ahead, the cathedral’s marble façade above you. Continue north along Via dei Servi to Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, considered by many urbanists the most harmonious square in Florence. From there, Via Ricasoli takes three more minutes to the Accademia entrance. The entire route is pedestrian, flat, and dense with architectural incident. On the return, consider a detour to the Convent of San Marco, where Fra Angelico painted a fresco in every monk’s cell between 1438 and 1445 — an experience of quiet devotional intensity that complements the David’s civic energy.
