Boutique Hotel near Palazzo Pitti & Boboli Gardens
Ten minutes on foot from Via Porta Rossa 23, across Ponte Vecchio, into the world of the Medici grand dukes
Palazzo Pitti: The Medici Palace That Dwarfs Versailles in Historical Depth
Palazzo Pitti began as a merchant’s statement of ambition: Luca Pitti commissioned the building in 1458, intending it to surpass every other private residence in Florence. The Medici acquired it a century later and spent two hundred years making it the principal seat of Tuscan power — the Palatine Gallery, where Raphael and Titian hang in rooms still decorated as the grand dukes left them; the Royal Apartments with their original Savoy furnishings; the Gallery of Modern Art. Behind the building, the Boboli Gardens rise up the hillside in a sequence of terraces, fountains, grottos, and amphitheatres that took four centuries to complete. Adjacent, the Bardini Garden offers a more intimate experience: wilder, more romantic, its wisteria pergola in late April among the most beautiful single sights in Florence. Relais La Capricciosa, our boutique hotel on Via Porta Rossa, is ten minutes on foot from all of this.
The Walk via Ponte Vecchio: Florence’s Most Beautiful Short Journey
The route from our boutique hotel to Palazzo Pitti is, in itself, a reason to stay with us. Step out of the entrance at Via Porta Rossa 23, turn right, and walk south for two minutes to Ponte Vecchio. Cross the bridge — slowly, pausing to look through the gaps between the jewellers’ workshops at the Arno shimmering below — and you are in the Oltrarno, the district south of the river that Florentines have long considered their true neighbourhood. From the bridge’s southern foot, follow Via dei Guicciardini for three minutes through artisan workshops and neighbourhood trattorias, and the immense rusticated stone wall of Palazzo Pitti suddenly fills your entire field of vision. The whole walk takes ten minutes at the most leisurely pace.
The Oltrarno Atmosphere: Why the South Bank Rewards the Walk
One of the less-discussed pleasures of staying at a boutique hotel as centrally placed as Relais La Capricciosa is the ease with which the Oltrarno becomes a daily destination rather than an excursion. The neighbourhood retains an artisan character that the north bank has largely surrendered to tourism. Via Maggio is lined with antique dealers of international reputation. The workshop of a bookbinder on Via dei Serragli, a goldsmith’s studio on Borgo San Jacopo — these are businesses that have operated continuously since the Renaissance. Our Art Concierge arranges private visits to artisan workshops for guests who want to see these crafts at their source. For couples who want to combine a morning at the Palatine Gallery with an afternoon among the artisans, our boutique hotel’s location makes that combination effortless.
The Boboli and Bardini Gardens: How to See Both on One Morning
The Boboli Gardens open at 08:15 and in the first ninety minutes the terraces feel very nearly private. The amphitheatre behind the palace, the Oceanus Fountain by Giambologna, the Grotta Grande, and the long cypress-lined Viottolone all repay a slow, unhurried morning walk. From the garden’s upper ramparts, the view across the Arno to the cathedral dome is one of the finest in the city. The combined Boboli–Bardini ticket allows you to enter the Bardini Garden: an easier walk, wilder planting, and the famous wisteria pergola that blooms in April and early May. Our Art Concierge can time your visit to coincide with peak wisteria bloom.
