From the bridge’s southern foot, follow Via dei Guicciardini for three minutes through artisan workshops and neighbourhood trattorias, and the immense rusticated stone wall of Palazzo Pitti suddenly fills your entire field of vision. The Boboli Gardens open at 08:15 and in the first ninety minutes the terraces feel very nearly private. The amphitheatre behind the palace, the Oceanus Fountain by Giambologna, the Grotta Grande, and the long cypress-lined Viottolone all repay a slow, unhurried morning walk. From the garden’s upper ramparts, the view across the Arno to the cathedral dome is one of the finest in the city.
